Why Gravina / Altamura for an olive weekend
The Alta Murgia sits inland from Bari: limestone plateaus, century-old olive trees, and stone towns. Altamura and Gravina in Puglia are practical bases for frantoio (mill) visits and harvest-season atmosphere — not a coastal photo-tour circuit.
It isn’t a mega resort strip. Think one mill morning, a tasting flight, a walk above the gravina canyon, and enough structure for a weekend. Charts first; cargo later.
2–3 day skeleton itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive & orient
- Travel from Bari (see transport below). Aim to arrive mid-afternoon if you can.
- Settle in Altamura (livelier, bread town) or Gravina (dramatic canyon views).
- Short walk: historic centre, aperitivo with local bread and a first oil drizzle.
Day 2 — Grove & mill
- Morning: booked frantoio visit and oil tasting (often 1–2 hours). In harvest season (typically autumn), ask whether a short grove / picking orientation is offered.
- Lunch with focaccia or Altamura DOP bread and raw vegetables for tasting oil properly.
- Afternoon: second mill or farm shop, or explore Gravina’s aqueduct bridge and rock-cut churches / Altamura’s centro storico.
- Evening: rest — olive oil and red wine both want a sober walk home.
Day 3 (optional) — Slow exit
- Morning: buy sealed bottles to pack; optional Alta Murgia park viewpoint if you have a car.
- Return to Bari — leave buffer for FAL / replacement-bus quirks.
Two full days work fine. Three days help if harvest visits run on farm time.
Bari → Altamura / Gravina transport
High-level options only — check current schedules and prices before you travel; Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) sometimes substitutes buses on sections of the line.
- Train / FAL: Services from Bari Centrale toward Altamura and Gravina on the Appulo Lucane network. Journey is typically around 1–1.5 hours depending on stops and any bus substitution. Use FAL / regional planners for your dates.
- Bus: Regional coaches also link Bari with Murgia towns — compare door-to-door time vs rail for your day.
- Car: Roughly 45–60 minutes from Bari airport / city. Best for reaching groves and park viewpoints; not required for a town-and-mill weekend if your mill is near the centre.
Build in slack on return: evening FAL frequency thins out.
What to book ahead vs walk-up
Book ahead
- Frantoio tours and seated tastings in harvest season (autumn) and holiday weekends.
- Any grove harvest participation — farms limit group size.
- Your stay — weekend rooms in Gravina and Altamura fill in autumn.
Often walk-up / flexible
- Oil shops for a bottle without a full tour.
- Casual meals and focaccia counters outside peak hours.
- Off-season weekday mill visits — still polite to message ahead.
What to do / learn — orientation
Expect cultivar talk (e.g. Coratina and other Puglian olives), extraction stages, and tasting oil by bitterness / pungency with bread — not a lecture-only visit.
Orientation only (not confirmed bookings): visitors often research mills and experiences around Altamura and Gravina (public-facing names such as Frantoio Perniola and harvest workshops listed by local hospitality projects appear frequently). Always verify opening hours and book directly; this page does not hold inventory or affiliate slots.
Tip: Lock one mill tasting early; leave the canyon walk flexible for weather.
Stay at a glance
- Altamura: Walkable centre, famous bread, easy FAL stop.
- Gravina in Puglia: Quieter, scenic; good if your mill is nearby.
Look for: quiet rooms, breakfast, walking distance to dinner, and clear cancellation terms. We’re not listing fake “booked” hotels here.
Practical notes
- Language: Italian first; some English at tourism-facing mills. Learn hello / thank you: buongiorno / grazie.
- Season: Harvest is typically autumn — confirm local timing. Spring is pleasant for walking; summer is hot on the plateau.
- Cash / card: Cards common in towns; keep cash for smaller farm shops.
- Etiquette: Closed shoes in mills; ask before photos near presses; don’t taste from open vats without invitation. Pack bottles upright and padded.
